Come meet a great guy, Eric Gioia, currently our City Councilmember from Queens, and an up-and-coming all-around Good Guy. Here's Eric's bio: http://www.ericgioia.com/about
Eric has the pulse of the regular guy - he just completed the "Food Stamp Challenge," at no small effort. Read about it here - http://www.ericgioia.com/news?id=0150. It's something MORE of our electeds should undertake - and some of us, too - for sure. Heck, I didn't know how much the average weekly food stamp allotment was, until I read about Eric's effort.
As stated, "After living for a week on $28 worth of groceries - the average food stamp allotment paid to individuals - Gioia was unable to get enough to eat. He said that what he bought at local supermarkets was of little nutritional value." - Eric is urging food giant Costco to accept food stamps - a most worthy initiative, I'm sure we would agree.
It is imperative that the Democratic Party enlarge its razor-thin, 51-49 majority in the United States Senate in November 2008, thereby alleviating the possibility of a Joe Lieberman (D-CT) defection changing the balance of power.
With that issue in mind, we are organzing a fundraiser for Maine Congressman Tom Allen - who is running for Senate against Republican incumbent Susan Collins - on Thursday evening, April 26 from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM. Proceeds of the event, dubbed "The Maine Event", will go to benefit the "Allen for Congress" campaign and will feature special guest speakers Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY).
Politically savvy New Yorkers are well aware of the fact that, numerically speaking, a pick-up of a Senate seat in Maine is as significant as maintaining a Senate seat in New York. For this reason New Yorkers are gearing up for "The Maine Event", a evening when local Democrats will stand with the Maine Congressman as he continues on his journey to unseat an incumbent Republican Senator - thereby strengthening and solidifying Democratic grasp of the Senate.
The stem cell research bill H.R. 810 is now scheduled for final DEBATE MONDAY and VOTE TUESDAY. President Bush has promised to veto it, even if it passes.
This is the last chance we have to a cure for many conquerable conditions - diabetes, Parkinson's, spinal cord injuries - are you as sick as I am of waiting for people to wake up from the New Dark Ages and catch up to science? How many people do YOU know with these unnecessary, degenerative, and ultimately fatal conditions? Take a moment and think about it.
There is NO predicting who will get them.
Take another moment and think again - the life you save could be your own.
If enough Senators support what most of America is seeking, and what has already passed half our representatives, we can override the promised veto.
I'm willing to walk the walk and talk the talk, for those who can't. - Are YOU?
WE CAN DO THIS - HERE'S HOW ...!! >>>
Go to the Parkinson's Action Network - It has a neat zip code entry window which leads you right to your particular Senator's phone no. - Link -
http://capwiz.com/pan/callalert/index.tt ?alertid=8885886&queueid=[capwiz:queue_id]
Email your lists and out-of-State friends to enter THEIR zip codes here, get THEIR Senator's phone nos., and ask THEM to call THEIR Senators, too, for widest possible coverage.
Please do it now. The debate is Monday. The vote is Tuesday. In one day it's the weekend.
*The more Senators in favor of this passing, the more votes we can have to override the promised Presidential veto.
This is the "Neighbor-to-Neighbor Network for Stem Cell Research."
Thank you for your caring and compassion.
